The total volume of a board measured in liters, which determines how much flotation and buoyancy it provides in the water.
Board volume is one of the most important specs when choosing any watersports board. Measured in liters, it tells you how much water the board displaces — and therefore how much flotation it provides. As a rough guideline, a board with volume in liters close to your body weight in kilograms will float you but feel unstable, while a board with significantly more volume feels stable and forgiving.
SUP boards range from 150–350 liters for maximum stability. Windsurf boards span from 80 liters (expert wave boards) to 240+ liters (beginner freeride). Kiteboards are usually low volume (30–50 liters) because the kite provides lift.
Surf foil boards can be tiny (20–40 liters) since the foil provides lift once moving. More volume means easier water starts, more stability at rest, and better light-wind performance, but less maneuverability and responsiveness at speed.
Example usage
"At 85 kg I need at least 130 liters for easy uphauling — my 110-liter board sinks too much when I'm standing still."
