A waist or seat harness worn by kitesurfers and windsurfers to hook into the control system, transferring the pull of the kite or sail from the arms to the body's core.

How it works

A harness is essential equipment for any wind-powered board sport. Without one, you'd have to hold the full force of the sail or kite with your arms alone — exhausting after just a few minutes. Waist harnesses sit around the lower torso and are the most popular choice in kitesurfing.

They allow maximum freedom of movement and a more upright stance. Seat harnesses wrap around the waist and under the thighs like a climbing harness, providing more support and preventing the harness from riding up — preferred by beginners and for long-distance riding. In windsurfing, harnesses hook onto lines attached to the boom, letting the rider lean back and use body weight against the sail.

Proper harness fit is critical: too loose and it shifts around uncomfortably, too tight and it restricts breathing and movement.

Example usage

"Switched from a seat harness to a waist harness this season — so much more freedom for unhooking and tricks."
