An explosive upward takeoff from the water surface to initiate a jump or aerial trick, generated by stamping hard on the board's tail or edge.

How it works

Pop is the foundation of every jump and aerial trick in board sports. In kitesurfing, pop refers to the technique of loading the board's edge against the water and then releasing explosively upward — this can be combined with kite lift for massive height or used independently for unhooked tricks. A strong pop comes from bending the knees, building pressure against the edge, and then extending explosively while pulling the bar in.

In wakeboarding, pop off the wake is what sends you airborne for rotations and grabs. In surfing, pop off the lip generates the speed and height needed for airs. In foiling, controlled pop can launch you out of the water for foil transitions and tricks.

Good pop requires timing, leg strength, and reading the water surface. Riders with strong pop can get significantly more height and airtime from the same conditions.

Example usage

"His pop is insane — he gets 3 meters of unhooked air just from loading the edge, no kite loop needed."
