A technique for getting up onto a board from the water using the power of a kite or sail, rather than standing up from the beach or climbing on from shallow water.

How it works

The water start is a pivotal skill in both windsurfing and kitesurfing. In windsurfing, the rider lies in the water, positions the sail so the wind catches it, and uses the sail's pull to lift their body onto the board and into a riding stance.

This replaces the beginner technique of uphauling (pulling the sail up by hand while standing on the board), which only works on larger boards with enough volume to support your weight at rest. Once you can water start, you can ride smaller, more performance-oriented boards.

In kitesurfing, every start is essentially a water start — you position the kite at the edge of the wind window, dive it through the power zone to generate pull, and let it drag you up onto the board. Mastering the water start in both sports opens up a huge jump in progression.

Example usage

"Took me 20 attempts to nail my first windsurf water start, but once it clicked, I never went back to uphauling."
