How kite sizing works

The size of kite you need depends on two main factors: your body weight and the wind speed. A heavier rider needs a larger kite to generate the same pull, while stronger wind means you can ride a smaller kite. Getting the right size is key to having a safe and fun session.

Most kitesurfers own two to three kites to cover their local wind range. For example, a 75 kg rider might carry a 12 m² for light days, a 9 m² for average wind, and a 7 m² for strong conditions. Having the right quiver means you can ride in nearly any forecast.

Keep in mind that foil kites (closed-cell) and LEI kites (leading-edge inflatable) have different depower ranges. Foil kites often cover a wider wind window, so you may need fewer sizes. LEI kites are more common for freestyle and wave riding but have a narrower effective range per size.

Wind speed is typically measured in knots for watersports. You can also reference the Beaufort scale to understand wind conditions in terms of sea state and wave behaviour.

When you need this

  • Choosing your first kite — find the right size for your local conditions
  • Building a quiver — figure out which two or three sizes cover your wind range
  • Travelling to a new spot — check what size to pack for the expected wind
  • Upgrading gear — compare your current kite to the recommended size
