How wetsuit thickness works

Wetsuit thickness is measured in millimetres and usually shown as two numbers, like 4/3 mm. The first number is the thickness of the torso panels (where you need the most insulation), and the second is the arms and legs. Thicker neoprene traps more water and keeps you warmer, but it also restricts movement.

Wind chill is a major factor that many people overlook. Even if the water is 18 °C, a strong 25-knot wind can make you feel much colder once you are out of the water between runs. Watersports like kitesurfing and windsurfing create significantly more wind chill than surfing because you are moving faster and spending time above the water.

Modern neoprene technology has improved dramatically. High-end suits today are lighter, stretchier, and warmer than budget suits of the same thickness. Features like sealed seams (blind-stitched and glued) and thermal linings make a big difference in cold water. If you ride often in winter conditions, investing in a premium suit is worth it.

When in doubt, go slightly warmer. You can always open the zip or flush some water, but there is no fix for a suit that is too thin on a cold day.

When you need this

  • Buying your first wetsuit — choose the right thickness for your local water
  • Travelling to a new spot — figure out what neoprene to pack
  • Transitioning between seasons — know when to switch thickness
  • Choosing accessories — decide if you need boots, gloves, or a hood
